inner imagination
A Practice Guide
A standalone collection of guided-imagery practices for working with the imagination. You don't need any background to use these. Each one is a short waking visualization: you close your eyes, picture a starting scene, let it move on its own, and return.
These practices are original compositions drawn from the broad tradition of guided visualization and waking-dream work. Use them freely.
How to practice any of these
The shape is the same every time, so once you have it you can run any practice in the guide:
Settle. Sit or lie comfortably, close your eyes, and let your body grow quiet for a moment.
Set an intention. Hold a simple sense of what you're here for — to release a worry, to rest, to meet a part of yourself.
See the opening image. Each practice gives you a scene to picture. Let it appear as vividly as it wants to — sight, sound, texture, temperature.
Let it move. Don't force the outcome. Watch the image change, and notice what shifts — light growing, a weight lifting, a color clearing.
Return. When it feels complete, let the scene fade, sense your body again, and open your eyes. Carry the feeling with you.
Most take two to five minutes. Shorter and slower is better than longer and rushed.
Foundations — Imagination & Body Skills
Start here. These build the basic skill of dropping into the imaginal state and sensing clearly.
Arriving in the Body. Close your eyes and let yourself settle. Picture a soft warm light entering at the top of your head. Let it move slowly downward — face, shoulders, chest, arms, belly, legs — warming and loosening everything it passes through. When it reaches your feet, feel your whole body lit and present. Open your eyes.
Waking the Inner Senses. Close your eyes. In your mind, taste a wedge of bright citrus — feel your mouth respond. Now hear a single bell ringing somewhere far off. Feel cool sand running through your fingers. See a candle flame leaning in a draft. One by one, your inner senses come awake. Open your eyes.
Roots and Crown. Close your eyes and feel your feet on the ground. Picture roots growing from the soles of your feet, down into the earth, holding you steady. Now picture a clear line of light rising from the crown of your head into the sky. Held below and lifted above, feel yourself upright and calm between the two. Open your eyes.
The Still Pond. Close your eyes. Imagine your mind as the surface of a pond, rippling and busy. Watch the ripples slow, spread, and flatten until the water is perfectly still and clear. When it is calm, let a single image rise to the surface on its own. Notice what appears. Open your eyes.
Stepping Through the Doorway. Close your eyes and picture a doorway standing in front of you — any door at all. Reach out, open it, and step through into whatever landscape waits on the other side. Look around: the ground, the light, the air. You are now inside the imagination, ready to work. Open your eyes when you're done exploring.
Dreams & Sleep
For falling asleep consciously, putting questions to your dreams, and softening nightmares.
The Question at the Threshold. As you lie down to sleep, close your eyes and bring one clear question to mind. Picture writing it on a card and sealing it inside an envelope. Slide the envelope beneath your pillow in your imagination, trusting the night to work on it. Let go of the question and drift. Notice in the morning what surfaces.
Rewriting the Ending. Close your eyes and recall a frightening dream, but only up to the moment just before it turned bad. Freeze it there. Now change what happens next: give yourself a door, a helper, a sudden strength — whatever turns the scene. Run the new ending two or three times until it feels natural. Open your eyes.
The Sentinel at the Door. Before sleep, close your eyes and picture the entrance to the room you're in. Call up a guardian to stand watch there — a tall figure, a calm animal, a steady light. See it take its place at the threshold and settle in for the night. Feel the room become safe. Let yourself sleep.
Catching the Dream on Waking. The moment you wake, stay still with your eyes closed. Don't reach for the day yet. Let the last images of the night drift back toward you, even faint ones. Picture writing them onto an open page so they don't slip away. Then open your eyes and, if you like, jot them down.
The Stairs Down to Sleep. Close your eyes and picture a wide, gentle staircase leading down into a warm and welcoming dark. Take the first step down, feeling yourself grow heavier and calmer. With each step, sink deeper and let more of the day fall away behind you. Keep descending slowly until sleep meets you.
Clearing Fear, Worry, Guilt & Regret
Quick releases for the inner weight that blocks peace and action.
Setting Down the Stones. Close your eyes and see yourself on a path with a heavy pack on your back. Stop, lift the pack off, and open it — inside are smooth stones, each one a worry. Take them out one at a time, name each silently, and set it on the ground beside the path. When the pack is empty, feel how light it is, shoulder it again, and walk on. Open your eyes.
The Tide Goes Out. Close your eyes and picture standing at the edge of a beach. Your worries lie scattered along the wet sand like driftwood and debris. Watch the tide begin to pull back, sliding each piece down the sand and out into the wide sea. The beach is left clean and smooth. Open your eyes.
The Little Boat. Close your eyes and feel the weight of a regret or an old guilt in your hands, as if it were a folded letter. Walk to the bank of a slow river and set the letter into a small paper boat. Place the boat on the water and let the current carry it gently out of sight. Watch it go, and feel your hands grow empty. Open your eyes.
The Worry Lantern. Close your eyes and gather your worries one by one into a paper lantern, like small grey moths. When they're all inside, light the wick. Watch the lantern fill with warm light and lift slowly out of your hands, rising higher and higher until it's just a faint star. Let it disappear. Open your eyes.
Switching Off the Lights. Close your eyes and picture a tall building at night with many windows lit — each lit window a thing you're anxious about. Walk through the building, room by room, switching off each light as you pass. Leave just one warm window glowing for comfort. Step outside and look up at the quiet, mostly dark building. Open your eyes.
Emotions into Feeling
For turning raw or stuck emotion into something clear that can move through and pass.
Naming the Weather. Close your eyes and ask what the feeling looks like as weather — a black storm, a grey fog, a hot still sky. Let it form fully overhead and name it plainly: "this is anger," "this is grief." Now watch it move, the way all weather does, drifting slowly across and off the horizon. See the open sky it leaves behind. Open your eyes.
Draining the Color. Close your eyes and find where the feeling sits in your body. Give it a color and watch it pool there. Now picture it draining slowly downward, out through the soles of your feet and into the ground, like water leaving a basin. As the last of it goes, let clear light fill the space it left. Open your eyes.
From Fire to Embers. (for anger) Close your eyes and let the anger become a roaring bonfire in front of you. Don't put it out — let it burn, hot and bright, until it has spent itself. Watch the flames sink down into a bed of glowing embers. Hold your hands toward them and feel steady warmth instead of heat. The energy stays; the burning settles. Open your eyes.
The Thaw. (for numbness or held grief) Close your eyes and picture a feeling frozen under a sheet of ice — a still, white lake. Let a warm sun rise over it. Watch the surface begin to soften, then trickle, then move, until water flows freely again beneath open sky. Let whatever was frozen move once more. Open your eyes.
Cupping the Spark. Close your eyes and search for the smallest spark of brightness somewhere inside you, however faint. Cup your hands around it gently, as you would a small flame in wind. Breath of attention by attention, let it grow steadier and warmer until its light fills your whole chest. Rest in that warmth. Open your eyes.
The Inner Child & Self-Repair
For meeting, comforting, and tending earlier or wounded parts of yourself.
Meeting the Younger You. Close your eyes and picture yourself at a younger age, standing a little way off. Walk over slowly so as not to startle them, and sit down beside them. Offer them what they most needed back then — your company, your words, your protection. Stay until they soften. Open your eyes.
Walking the Old House. Close your eyes and step into the home you grew up in. Walk its rooms until you find your younger self somewhere inside. Take their hand and lead them out of any room that felt heavy, into somewhere bright and safe and theirs. Let them settle there. Open your eyes.
Comforting the Frightened One. Close your eyes and find a younger version of yourself who is afraid. Kneel down to their level. Wrap them in a warm blanket of soft light and hold them, saying without words that they're safe now. Stay until the trembling stops and their breathing eases. Open your eyes.
Repainting the Wall. Close your eyes and recall a harsh sentence you say to yourself — "I'm too much," "I'm not enough." See it written large on a wall in front of you. Now take a brush and paint the wall clean, then write a truer, kinder sentence in its place. Step back and read the new words. Open your eyes.
The Gift Returned. Close your eyes and picture your younger self looking up at you, holding out empty hands. Place into them the thing they were denied — a toy, a word of praise, permission to rest, a yes. Watch their face change as they receive it. Feel the gift settle in you too. Open your eyes.
Ancestry & Family Patterns
For seeing inherited patterns clearly, releasing what isn't yours, and honoring the line.
Threads of the Line. Close your eyes and picture your family stretching back behind you — parents, grandparents, and on, a long row of figures. Notice a single colored thread woven through all of them, some pattern passed hand to hand. See it reach you, and decide, gently, whether to keep weaving it or let it end here. Open your eyes.
Handing Back the Pack. Close your eyes and feel a heavy pack on your shoulders that was handed down to you — a burden never really yours. Turn to the ones who carried it before you and, with respect, lift it off and give it back into their keeping. Keep only the gifts: their strength, their love, their skill. Stand lighter. Open your eyes.
The Long Table. Close your eyes and find yourself at a long table lined with your forebears. Look down the length of it at their faces. Receive a blessing or a gift from one of them, and offer forgiveness or release to another. Let the table hold both the giving and the letting go. Open your eyes.
Cutting the Old Cord. Close your eyes and notice a cord running from you to an ancestor, carrying an old pattern between you. Thank them sincerely for what they gave. Then take a blade of light and cut the cord cleanly, keeping the love and releasing the pattern. Watch the cut ends close over softly. Open your eyes.
Planting a New Line. Close your eyes and stand at the foot of your family tree, its roots deep and old. In the soil before it, plant a single seed — the new pattern you want to begin with you. Water it and watch a green shoot break the surface. Know that what grows from here is yours to start. Open your eyes.
Relationships & Love
For repairing, deepening, and reaching toward connection with others.
Speaking Across the Light. Close your eyes and picture the other person seated across from you in soft, warm light. Say to them, silently, the thing that has gone unsaid between you. Then stop and listen — let them answer in their own words. Let something pass between you, even if small. Open your eyes.
Building the Span. Close your eyes and see a gap between you and someone you've grown distant from — a chasm with the two of you on either side. Begin laying a bridge across it, one plank at a time, each plank a small act of goodwill. Walk out to meet them in the middle. Open your eyes.
Clearing the Static. Close your eyes and picture the connection between you and another as a radio signal full of static and noise. Reach for the dial and tune it slowly, patiently, cutting through the interference. Find the frequency where their true voice comes through clear and warm. Rest there a moment. Open your eyes.
Returning What Isn't Mine. Close your eyes and notice you've been carrying a hurt or resentment that really belongs to someone else. Gather it up and, without blame, hand it back to them to do with as they will. Keep your own clear ground and your own peace. Feel your hands and chest lighten. Open your eyes.
The Beacon. (for new connection) Close your eyes and hold the felt sense of the bond you're hoping for — its warmth, its ease, what it would feel like to be met. Picture that feeling as a steady light in your chest. Let the light shine outward like a beacon across a dark sea, a signal sent toward whoever is meant to find it. Open your eyes.
Time & Choice
For changing your relationship to time — stepping out of the rush and into spaciousness.
Watching the Current. Close your eyes and see time as a fast-moving river you've been swept along in. Reach up and pull yourself out onto the grassy bank. Sit down and simply watch the water rush past, no longer carried by it. Feel how steady and unhurried the bank is. Open your eyes.
Rewinding the Reel. Close your eyes and picture a stressful stretch of your day as a strip of film. Now run it backward — events reversing, your body unwinding, tension undoing itself frame by frame — all the way to the calm moment before it began. Let your body return to that earlier ease. Open your eyes.
The Wheel of the Year. Close your eyes and notice you've been seeing time as a straight line racing forward toward deadlines. Let that line bend into a great slow wheel of seasons instead — spring, summer, autumn, winter, turning and returning. Feel yourself inside a cycle that always comes back around, never just running out. Open your eyes.
Stretching the Moment. Close your eyes and choose one good moment, however small. Step into it and slow it down — slower and slower — until it opens wide and spacious around you, with no before and no after pulling at you. Rest inside that roomy, timeless pause. Open your eyes.
The Clock Loosens Its Grip. Close your eyes and picture a clock with its hands sweeping fast, driving you. Watch the hands begin to slow. Let them soften and slow further still, until time feels loose and roomy rather than tight. Notice how much space there suddenly seems to be. Open your eyes.
Healing the Body
Gentle imagery for tension, discomfort, and a felt sense of ease. These support wellbeing and rest; they are not a substitute for medical care.
Light Through the Sore Place. Close your eyes and find an area of tension or discomfort in your body. Picture a warm, soft beam of light coming to rest on it. Let the light soak in, loosening what's tight and easing what's sore, the way sun softens stiff ground. Stay with it until the area feels warmer and lighter. Open your eyes.
The Cool Spring. Close your eyes and picture a place in your body that feels hot, tight, or irritated. Imagine a clear, cool spring rising up and flowing gently over it. Feel the coolness soothe and settle the area, carrying the heat away downstream. Let it run as long as you like. Open your eyes.
Unknotting the Rope. Close your eyes and picture a place of tension as a thick rope pulled into a hard knot. Take it in your hands and work it patiently — easing one loop, then the next, never yanking. Feel the knot give, loosen, and finally fall open into a soft, slack length of rope. Open your eyes.
Picturing Wholeness. Close your eyes and bring to mind a part of you that's troubling you. Now picture that same part as it is on a good day — easy, working well, at rest. Hold that picture steadily and let your body recognize it, like remembering a familiar feeling. Let the image settle in. Open your eyes.
Washing Through. Close your eyes and imagine a clear, gentle stream entering at the top of your head. Let it flow down through your whole body, washing through every part, carrying out whatever feels heavy or stale. Watch it run out through your feet, leaving you rinsed clean and light. Open your eyes.
Heart, Prayer & Oneness
For the quieter, devotional practices — warmth, openness, surrender, and belonging.
The Lamp in the Chest. Close your eyes and find a small flame burning in the center of your chest. Give it your gentle attention and watch it steady and grow, its warmth spreading outward through your body. Let that warmth reach as far as it wants to go. Rest in the glow. Open your eyes.
Hands Held Open. Close your eyes and picture yourself holding an empty bowl, or simply your two hands cupped and open. Lift them, open and unhurried, asking — without words — to be given what you truly need. Hold the openness without grasping. Notice what begins to fill them. Open your eyes.
Into Larger Hands. Close your eyes and feel the weight of whatever you've been carrying alone. Picture a pair of vast, gentle hands opening beneath yours. Let the weight roll out of your grip and into theirs, to be held by something larger than you. Feel your arms come free. Open your eyes.
Widening the Circle. Close your eyes and feel a warmth at your heart. Let it spread outward in a ring to include the people you love. Let the ring widen again to include neighbors and strangers, then again to include everyone, everywhere. Rest in that wide, warm circle. Open your eyes.
Resting in the Vast. Close your eyes and let the sense of being a small separate self grow soft at its edges. Let it loosen and open into a large, calm quiet that holds you and everything else at once. Don't reach for anything — just rest in the spaciousness. When you're ready, let your edges return, and open your eyes.
Fifty practices across ten categories. Use the ones that fit what you're working on; return to the Foundations whenever you want to sharpen the skill itself.
